Abby recited a poem aloud for her school project and won a PTA award. It was also presented by the Biden Foundation as part of a creative initiative for military children called Imaging Home. Abby's poem is called "My Home in Military Life."
As a parent, Navy wife Alison Buckholz said writing is a way for her son to help him understand the changes military life brings. She wrote a short story for her son called "It Was a Good Day" two and a half hours after her husband was deployed, and Alison knew the family would be moving when the deployment was over.
Military children are truly impressive. They go through all the hardships of military life, but they never enlisted. They go through job placements, long separations from a serving parent (or parents), PCS moves, living in other countries, and saying "see you" to lots of friends.

They travel very well. My kids amaze me with how resilient and flexible they are. Change is normal for them. "Mother city" will not be the same for them as a citizen child. Hometown means a lot to a military kid: family, piles of dirt (from different homes), a set map, change.
